SpaceX Acquires AI Coding Startup Cursor for $60 Billion
SpaceX announced it will acquire Cursor — the popular AI-powered code editor built by Anysphere — for $60 billion in an all-stock transaction. The deal came just days after SpaceX's historic IPO under the ticker SPCX.
Cursor had been valued at $2.5 billion in its last funding round. Back in April, both companies had announced a preliminary agreement giving SpaceX a call option to buy Cursor after the IPO for $60 billion.
The deal carries significant penalties: $10 billion if SpaceX fails to close on its end, and a $4 billion breakup fee during regulatory review. Morningstar analysts estimate the deal will close in Q3 2026.
With this acquisition, SpaceX aims to strengthen its footprint in the fast-growing enterprise AI tools market, directly competing with Microsoft (GitHub Copilot), Google (Gemini Code Assist), and Amazon (Amazon Q).
