OpenAI raised the price of ChatGPT Plus: is it still worth it?
If you use ChatGPT frequently, you probably noticed the change: the Plus plan now costs $30 per month instead of the previous $20.
OpenAI says the increase is justified because it now includes access to more advanced features: it can analyze images, browse the internet in real time, create images, and use specialized tools. All of that was previously extra or limited.
What do you get for $30/month?
- Access to OpenAI's most advanced model without reasonable usage limits
- Can view and analyze images you send
- Searches for up-to-date information on the internet
- Creates images from text descriptions
- Priority access during high demand
Is it worth it? It depends on how much you use it. If you use it every day for work — drafting emails, analyzing documents, generating ideas — it probably is. If you use it once or twice a week, there are free alternatives like Claude (which offers a fairly generous free plan), Google's Gemini (free with your Google account), or ChatGPT's own free version.
The practical advice: before paying, try the free alternatives for a week. Many people find that Claude or Gemini cover 90% of what they need at no cost.

What does this mean for you?
Don't pay automatically. First try free alternatives like Claude, Gemini, or the free version of ChatGPT. If after a week you feel you need more, then consider the paid plan.
