Google launched an AI that can make 8-second videos — here's how it works

Google introduced Veo 2, an AI program that can create short videos from a written description. You tell it "a sunset in Cartagena with seagulls flying over the sea" and in a few minutes, it generates a video that looks pretty close to reality.

How does it work? Think of it as an extremely fast digital artist. The program has "seen" millions of videos and learned how things move, how light changes, how water flows. When you describe something, it combines everything it learned to create something new.

For now, the videos are short — 8 seconds max — and not always perfect. Sometimes people's hands look weird or movements aren't entirely natural. But the quality has improved dramatically compared to what existed just a year ago.

What is this useful for in real life?

  • Advertising: A small shop could create a video ad without hiring a production team
  • Education: A teacher could generate animations to explain difficult concepts
  • Social media: Content creators could produce visual material quickly

This also raises concerns about fake videos. Google says all videos generated with Veo 2 carry an invisible watermark so it can be verified they were created by AI.

It's not available to the general public yet — only to selected creators through Google Labs. But similar tools like Runway and Pika are already available if you want to experiment with AI-generated video.

What does this mean for you?

You don't need to worry about mastering this technology yet, but you should understand it. If you manage social media for a business, in the coming months you'll be able to create promotional videos without cameras or equipment. Tools like Runway or Pika already let you experiment today.
