Amazon to invest up to another $25 billion in Anthropic

Amazon announced on April 20, 2026 an expansion of its deal with Anthropic: it will invest $5 billion immediately and up to $20 billion more tied to specific commercial milestones. Anthropic's valuation is now $380 billion — nearly double what it was a year ago.

Anthropic's commitment: over $100 billion in AWS technology over the next 10 years, including current and future generations of its Trainium chips. Anthropic also said it secured up to 5 gigawatts of capacity for training and deploying its Claude models.

Andy Jassy, Amazon's CEO, said in a statement: "Anthropic's commitment to run its large language models on AWS Trainium for the next decade reflects the progress we've made together on custom silicon."

For context: in February 2026, Amazon said it expected to spend $200 billion this year in capital expenditures, most of it on AI infrastructure. This investment in Anthropic is part of that strategy.

The big hyperscalers (Amazon, Microsoft, Google) are in a race to accumulate AI capacity as fast as possible. Amazon's investment in Anthropic is the largest ever made by a company in an AI startup to date.

What does this mean for you?

The AI fight is among the giants — Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. But the side effect is that smaller companies benefit from the custom silicon and infrastructure these investments build. AWS Trainium is becoming a real alternative to NVIDIA chips for training models.
